Well, it is hard to believe it has been over a year since I updated this site. Shame on me! But... I knew that would be a possibility in the beginning, so I'm not too disappointed in myself!
A lot has happened over the past year, and I will get around to bringing things up to date. I have continued, but not completed the painting and renovations on our house... and plan to do more this summer.
Stay tuned for further updates in the next few days.....

Chapter 5: 70's Child Meets the Twenty-First Century
Although the challenge ahead of me appears to be overwhelming, my strength shall come from tackling it one step at a time.
My very first mission was to rid the mansion of the horrid Bunny Egg Blue on the living room walls! My living room is very nicely laid out, with a very large picture window on the shorter street side. Other than this, the only break in any of my walls is the large rounded archway leading into my downstairs hallway. (Or does the archway lead from the downstairs hallway into the living room...Which comes first, the chicken or the egg??). This impressed me, as it seems I have never lived anywhere with an unbroken canvas in front of which I can arrange, rearrange and accessorize my rooms, then re-arrange again! Unlike my mother who changes her window coverings with the season (ahem...and for every holiday, major or minor, I might add...) my concession to seasonal change is to rearrange the furniture. Being able to do this is especially important when you have a big-screen television, as it will be soooo nice not having to leave it in 'the only spot it will fit in the entire room'! The midday light shining in though the sheer curtains dances wonderfully throughout the room, and the darkened room at night with the hall picture light giving off its soft glow, gives the room a warm and romantic ambiance... relaxation calling my name! (The early morning light, however, causes havoc and distress when attempting to watch said television....note to self: different angle? a large blind? heavy (shudder!) drapes?....) The floors are medium wood, and our living room furniture (incidently, which was picked out solely by hubby...and I have to concede was a much better choice than what I had picked out!!) is a very neutral golden brown blend.
Because of the natural light, the floor and furniture colors, I'm thinking this would be a very good opportunity to splash on a very rich color. Albeit, not an outrageous color, but something that will be bold, have substance, have depth and still maintain the subtleness of a neutral tone. This will allow me to introduce some splashes of color into the theme. As well, I will be able to put a more colorful paint in the hallway, which is largely visible from the living room area. OK, so black would meet all of these expectations, but I think that mixing black and brown is an atrocity!!! I won't even wear brown pants with black shoes, I am so anal about it!! But you get the picture???
Now, I'm starting to really feel guilty about wanting to eliminate the poor dear Easter Bunny... after all, he has taken centuries to grow, and who am I to just give him the axe with no chance of promotion? So let's look at this differently.... I'd never want to be accused of overlooking anyone's good qualities, so perhaps there is a happy alternative. Oh, yes..... I do recall earlier a fleeting thought about chocolate. Hmmm! A deep, rich, lighter than a bitter chocolate but darker than a milk chocolate brown.... I think that would work wonderfully! And now I'm visualizing clear glass containers filled with Bridge Mixture or Glossette Raisins as accessories.... (Did I mention I live very close to a chocolate factory?) And think of the colors I could use for pillows, pictures, ornaments......
IT HAS BEEN DECIDED....'MY MIND'S MADE UP AND I'M READY TO ROLL!'. It's off to Kent Building Center for the first round of paint purchasing. There's no stopping me now......
Whoa.... this may be a good place to mention that my 70's world consciousness has evolved to a great respect for the earth and the dangers we are submitting her to... depletion of our natural resources, global warming, the whole bit! Suffice it to say that I have not had a 'real' Christmas tree in years! I certainly have no issues with trees being grown and harvested specifically for this seasonal industry, but wish someone would start selling trees that are still attached to their roots and which can be potted outside after the festive season is over with. I would love some year to have 5 or 6 smaller trees, all potted or pottable (is that a word? I know it's not potable....meaning drinkable or usable, as in potable water) grouped in front of a window, lit up with thousands of sparkling clear lights...(LED, of course....burning less energy!). Now , this is probably not adding up for those who know me well, because I need reminding to turn out lights when I leave a room (my reasoning is that I am getting blinder by the month, and I need the lights to see my way around), or that I only sort a portion of my garbage....(I can't see the reasoning in all plastics not being able to be sorted together, so I don't separate them!). But, I am trying......
'Where in the name of Thunder is she going now'...I can hear you saying. Wellllll, what did I run into at the Kent store but my first ever, and it was awe inspiring, display of 'recyled paint'. Yup...another way to save the continent, if not the world. Paint that would normally be dumped and cause irreversible damage to the environment! Paint that other people didn't want anymore so they got rid of! Think about this..... did you ever wonder what they did with the paint they collected at those twice yearly drives they hold in mall parking lots? Or the stuff they collect at the recycling depots? Well, get ready, because this is your 'Educational Epihamy' for the day.
When they gather up all this paint, it is taken to a large recycling plant. There it is sorted by color, type, etc. Certain colors can be mixed together, while others remain strictly within their own palette. Next, the mixed paint is run through a series of very fine micron filters, eliminating any impurities and solid particles. The resulting paint is then more finely colored and packaged for resale through regular paint distribution centers.... or at least those centers associated with the recyling plant!
Now these are the restrictions....
- The recycled paint is water based - bonus!!! .
- The only finish available is matte....not a problem for me but maybe for some.
- The paint is premixed into colors... no other choices available. However, there is a nice range of about 15 different colors.
Here are the bonuses....
- You are using a previously damaging discard for a useful purpose
- The price is unbelievable....$12.99 a gallon!
- The colors are actually quite nice!
And get this....the marketing name for the brand I found.... ta-dah..... drum roll.....BOOMERANG - I love the significance - you throw it out and it comes back!!!
BUT....
Horror of horrors...there isn't a chocolate in the bunch! Nothing really deep colored, so rich that you can see the jewels shine through, or so dark you can imagine the skys over the Arabian dessert. Not wanting to just walk away from my so decisive choice of paint color, I am now in a dilemma... I really want to be environmentally conscious, but on the other hand, I am a bit sceptical......
Will so cheap a paint be any good? Will the matte mean fingerprints and splashes will be hard, if not impossible to clean up? How many gallons will it take to do one room? How long will it really take to dry?
So, I decide to pick a couple of random colors and buy 2 gallons to see how they are. For $12.99, they can be used for under coats or primer, if nothing else! Proud of my logic, home I went with my purchases....well, not to the apartment I'm still living in, but to the house I want to get ready before I move in!
Just for a few minutes...just to splash a bit on the walls...just to experiment!
Didn't mention that my living room has no overhead lights, did I? Thought not! So after painting a couple for square yards on the living room wall with the darker color I chose, I ran upstairs with the other color and did the same in the spare bedroom closet (just in case...). That didn't look too bad...a nice green! So run back downstairs to the front porch, which was really well lit and splashed on a few feet of the green (over the dark tan walls). Looked really nice here, at least wet! Heck, why not try the other color here, too? Wow....awesome!
Theoretically, if I let it dry overnight and came back with greasy hands tomorrow, maybe some soot from the car exhaust, dirt from outdoors, etc. and rubbed it in, it probably won't wash off the matte finish. But I need to know!
One more round of the house before I lock up and go back to the apartment, this time with a flashlight to check the living room color. Now this is awesome..... the paint is already dry, and had dried to a rich, darker color! Sure enough, I ran upstairs and the paint in the closet is almost dry, as well. As is the two colors on the porch wall!
EXTRA BONUSES:
- The paint flows on really nicely, has great coverage and dries extremely quick.
- There is no noticeable odor either during painting or after you're done!
I really like both colors, so if they pass the wash test the next day.... I will be back to paint at least two rooms with the colors I have chosen.
The green which I liked so well was called 'Sage' and I decided to use that both in my larger spare bedroom and the downstairs hallway. It is medium to dark moss green color, and has always been a favorite color of mine. I was so pleased to be able to incorporate that into the interior of the house.
The other colour I had purchased would definitely be going in the living room - for the most neutral, dark toned paint they had was a brown, although not a chocolate. But a very rich color once dried. So neutral you don't even realize it's a dark color until you look at it next to the white ceiling!
My wash test went really well the next night and I did use these two colors in the rooms I had selected. I couldn't wait to get started, and had both rooms and the downstairs hall down by the weekend! Not bad considering I did the living room by lamplight!
Oh, and by the way....the name of the color I used in the living room? So appropriate for a 70's kid....it was called 'HEMP'!

Well, it certainly has been a long time since I last visited! It has been a very long and eventful year, which hopefully will soon settle down.....
But never fear.... come feast or famine, excitement or melancholy, planned events vs unexpected last minute changes.... renovations do continue on!
Chapter 4: A Child of the 70's
Being a baby boomer may mean different things to different people. There's the crowd that thrives on 4 wheel drive urban wagons.... or the ones who specialize in early retirement...or even the ones who spend all their time trying to be overachievers! But for me, being a boomer means that I actually grew up in the 70's... not born then, but definitely the formative teen years which shape your thoughts, your abnormal ideas, and yes, even your strange perceptions for the rest of your life.
Now I know most of you are totally puzzled and are probably thinking 'Yeah, sure...how far out could it really be? But I see a lot of you nodding your heads and smiling. Yup... you were there, too, weren't you?
Take for instance...... school. School back then was fun. Really! Trust me...I'd never lead you astray. But hey... you should know all about it. Reality shows were not a new trend in the last ten years. For those of you who were there, the only reality that really exists on television was.....(drum roll, please...)...'That 70's Show'. Oh, yeah, now that was real. That was my class...those were my friends...and those were my clothes. I just can't figure who was taking all the movies of us!! There must have been hidden cameras everywhere! (But come to think of it, I somehow lost track of my yellow/green/blue plaid pants and the yellow short sleeve sweater with the navy and white stripes that I wore with it over a dark blue long sleeve shirt. I was so cool! I really rocked!!)
Hassan was our real foreign exchange student. And Carlson's hair was actually a lot bigger (psst...and he experimented a lot more, if you know what I mean.)..... Jim was the nerdy one always trying to be the 'in person'. The girls...well they were all of us, and who we all wanted to be. But you know.... I can't figure out whose parents they typecast for the television roles!! I think they stretched to truth there... probably for entertainment value!
The music, the fashions, the hairstyles, the colors.... the 'new movement' that grew out of the 50's 'Happy Days, and the 60's 'Hippy' days. Days when 'Love' would rule the world... Bear in mind that my older brother was of an impressionable age in the 60's...so I saw a lot of that era first hand...although not necessarily from him! After all, could you picture him as a hippy? There is not an imagination strong enough to conjure up a picture of him with long hair, beads and flowers in his hair! Just too freakin' funny!!! But I did notice his friends...and siblings of his friends! Music, on the other hand, he did enjoy.... from the 'Beatles' to 'Please Mr. Custer', he had them all!! Of course, some things from the 60's needed to meld into the 70's and slowly fade away as newer and more refined customs took their places!
Like flowers....in the 60's everyone either wore or sang about flowers...flowered neck leis or 'Going to San Francisco with Flowers in Your Hair'....... So, how did this transfer itself into the newer, hipper 70's children? Hey we liked flowers, too, but we were more interested in learning how to survive in case of the world coming to an end. After all, the hippies weren't successful in saving the world with all their love, so now we were all going to be very sensible about it and find a way to use those flowers in case of emergency. Hence.... tulip stem salad! Oh, yeah....and tasty it was. With a pinch of camomile flowers and a bit of rose hip broth...we were ready to face whatever was thrown at us! The town suffered a major tulip crisis in the summer of 72....
Music.... well, the Beatles survived, but we found a duo that was ...oh, so much better! Hours and hours of time spent listening to the hilarious comedy and shenanigans of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong! There's not a 70's child who can't still break down in uproarious laughter and side splitting shaking just at the mention of 'Sister Mary Elephant' or 'Fifi'. Or who cannot sympathize, if not actually immortalize their own experience, when things went 'Up in Smoke'! Ah.... those were the days, my friends.........
And the booze....those tiny little sample bottles so easily hid in your pockets on Friday night! We thought we were in heaven if we scored one of those! We'd carry it around with us for weeks, just to look important! (I don't know if anyone ever thought of actually drinking them... but they were a very important accessory!) And the visits to the friendly, if somewhat suspicious, neighborhood after-hours 'store'. You know the one....where the dear little lady so carefully wraps up those 'brown' paper bags, and hollers out as you leave here house 'be sure to bring those potatoes right home to your mother, dear!'. Well, about a mile down the hill, we'd all 5 meet up, head off to our secret spot in the woods, with the fallen logs for benches, and each sip back on one of those sweet 'potatoes'.... and when we were done of those, the sixth 'potato' was passed around for all to enjoy a last few drops! Man, were we cool!
So, how does this fun loving, risk taking, product of the 70's become todays somewhat staid, if not seemingly boring (but not bored by any means!!!), hard working, multi-tasking, energy professional?
Well, first you go away to college. Then you grow up, get a job, take on responsibilities, get married, start enjoying other things in life, until finally you look back and realize you've come a long way from where you used to be. So now you are the 'parents' from the 70's show, with the house, the car and the 9-5 job. While some started families of their own, some of us just 'borrowed' kids...that way we could send them home if they didn't behave! (Now you tell me who's the smarter ones??? All of the pleasure and none of the tantrums!!)
So its March of 2006 and there I sat, ready to remodel this, our newest acquisition. My mission: To kill off the Pastel Bunny and perhaps make the world a much calmer and serene place to live, with a splash of color to liven things up. Now, there will be some method to my madness. Hubby is still in Alberta, and this is my chance to make color decisions which I know may not be as easily done should he be here at my side. Not that he would mind, but he leans toward beige walls throughout being the ultimate in design choice. And we all know that most (but, not all....) men do not see the distinction between the thousands of shades of each color. From experience, I've learned to just go ahead and pick a color... once it's on the walls, he never fails to comment on how nice it all looks! Years ago, when my husband would mention a weekend with the guys to go hunting, or a weekend visit to his relatives, I would mentally start the list...paint, paper, brushes, etc and literally run out the door 10 minutes after he left, actual list in hand! Then I'd stack the old turntable with 6 or 7 Elton John albums and work like the devil. One weekend I managed to paper and paint an entire apartment on my own, before he got back to town! He's quick, though... next time he went away and called home, his first question when he heard the background music was 'What are you doing over now?' So, I am confident that however outlandish I go, however dark I decide to paint the rooms, that he will be pleased with the result in the end. Now here is where strategy comes in..... I don't plan to finish the entire house while he's gone...just the rooms I want to make the most drastic changes in. I'll leave some for him.... most likely the places where I want a light non-color, or where there are high ceilings. My momma didn't raise no fools!!
So, I'm armed with measurements, knowledge of all my furniture and accessories and mental images of how I want the rooms to 'feel' when they are done being painted. For one remnant which lives on from that wonderful 70's decade is that everything must have a good 'vibe' and needs to be really 'cool'. The feeling of relaxation is important as is the need to revitalize our energy! So.... It's off to the hardware store and hours and hours of checking out the paint types and colors. I know I'll come home with scads and scads of little paint samples and yes, scotch tape.
Come on, now, you must know what I want the tape for??? Surely no one can tell what a color is going to look like on a wall from one little sample. And how do you match a 1.5 by 1.5 little square of color against your furniture or window coverings? Yes...you tape several together to get a better 'feel' for it. I know Debbie would encourage us all to buy little sample bottles of the colors we want to try! Martha would encourage us to bring in existing items we want color coordinated and have a 'custom color' mixed for us! But, dammit, this is 'Decorating on a Dollar' here, and we don't even have the $1,000 for the whole house, let alone for each room! So samples and tape it is!
My biggest dilemma.... After sacrificing the 'Pastel Predator', should I lean towards the more outlandish and bold colors of my 70's self, or .... will I remain with the pale but more stately earthtone colors which would seem closer to my professional image? I can see the challenge now... my right hand grasping a gallon of 'mulled wine', or 'mediterranean sunset', while my left is getting ready to swing a gallon of 'dessert sand'! Meanwhile...if you could only be privy to the conversations I'll be having with myself!!

Chapter 3: Color Confidential
Time is slipping by, not slowly by any means, but galloping faster than a full grown Hereford whose heels are being nipped by an anxious Blue Heeler! One minute it's still spring. The next.... mid summer!
So, it seems like only yesterday that I was turning the key for the first time in our new(est) abode. Excited about all the little things I was going to get done before my husband came back out east, and kicking myself at the same time for buying yet another house!!!! What was I thinking??
Well, at least it means no more rent.....
Now I'm faced with the ever perplexing dilema of the internal decorator wannabe.... how to showcase those mega hours spent in front of the big screen absorbing all those little tidbits of useful knowledge. TV show designers are my heros!! So much talent!! So much insight!! So much flair!! So much..... money. Martha, don't desert me now.... show me the way to turn useless items into cherished collectables. Debbie, guide me to the ultimate painted room. Sara, showcase my nearest and dearest old items (sorry...that should read 'antiques and memoralia'). And Andrew.... well, where are you when I need you?
Now that I've had to reign in those lofty dreams and land back in reality, the first step is an overwhelming desire to attach fresh paint to these previously colored walls! Now, one has to realize that each person has their own comfort zone in color, and that your surroundings determine your moods and tranquility within your environment. Given the lovely pastel colors just recently applied to every wall surface in the entire house, I have to assume the previous owner and/or tenant, was indeed..... the Easter Bunny!!! And a crazy, all over the place hopping bunny, too. Not two rooms painted the same color throughout! But no discrimination here... must be a pastel of every color available.
There's robin's egg blue in the living room. It reminds me of those cadbury eggs with the speckles on the outside and chocolate in the center. Hmmmm.... maybe the chocolate's not a bad way to go. I'll have to file that thought for later!
My downstairs hallway is a pale mauve.... just lovely to look at. If you want to be reminded of melted grape popsicles mixing with vanilla ice cream. But then again..... if it was Old Fashioned French Vanilla, it would have such a rich creamy color, wouldn't it???
The kitchen. The room I never did like. The room I most want to change in the house. Tiny, ugly and no 'comfort' feeling. How can I cook in here? How can I make this a central part of my home? Well, the blue-grey walls, countertop and cupboards certainly aren't going to cut it. And did I mention that the countertop was painted... and not with Melamine! Oh, and don't forget the god-awful bright blue paint on the hardware and ... get this... on the range hood. Now, in case you're wondering 'why did she buy the house if she felt that way about the kitchen?..... just remember that at some point, I will be redoing the entire kitchen! I didn't like the kitchen in any of the houses I looked at, and that was the one and only drawback with this one. I forsee that this will take a chapter of its own sometime in the future! (It is truly a blessing to have a sibling who is a draftsperson.... and one who has some very constructive ideas in resale renovations.)
My lovely little dining room. My joy... my treasure. Yes! God was smiling with me. I have a separate dining room off the kitchen area, with wood floors and a Pella patio door ( I want to re-enact the Pella commercial with the guy setting his barbeque on fire in the back yard while the women stand there at the window and discuss the benefits of the slat blinds encased between the double layers of glass! You must know the one.... ) I can open and close the blinds without a thought of how hard they are going to be to clean! Or in my case... how many times I will need to get new ones because I've thrown the old ones out instead of the tiresome job of cleaning them!!! Unfortunately, the previous persons passionately preferred peach! Not a ripe, juicy, Okanagan Valley peach, but... a wimpy pastel peach. One that lacked enough sun to ripen it fully, and now instead is a hard, tasteless reminder that some fruit just shouldn't make it across the border! When we could have sun instead... bright, comforting sun, shining from my very large patio right in through those glass doors and making me feel like I'm back at the Melmerby or the New Harbour beach! I'll just have to make it happen, I guess!
As we leave the downstairs, my stairwell curves up towards the heavens. Well, actually, it has two steps, a landing, makes a turn, goes up several more, has another landing (with a window, no less!!!), makes another turn and the final two steps before entering the upstairs hallway. And extra wide staircase it is... so lovely. But start thinking.... 'Pretty in Pink', or more to the point... 'Pink Cotton Candy'. Does anyone really care that I have never like the color pink? Of any shade or combination. At any time. It reminds me of.. easter eggs - the sickening sweet sugar filled kind. It reminds me of.. a faded red when the dye all runs out of your favorite red tie-died t-shirt. It reminds me of... the frilly little girl I never was. (Put bow and flounces around the window and I'd probably never go up those steps!!!) So, there's a lot of wall to cover here and some really high ceilings. The painting here is a job best left for ... my hubby when he returns.
Welcome to the upper story of our house. The monotany of the walls is broken with bedroom doors, the bathroom and with a large hall closet. (Which as soon as winter comes, will be my first major rebuild project. I am so looking forward to that!!!) But, once again, the dreaded Easter Bunny strikes again. Another shade of purple, but more of a lilac this time. Now, I do happen to like lilac... my favorite flower, and my favorite bathroom accessory color... but this pastel bit is just getting to be much more than my poor eyesight can stand! I will need to explore the possibility of melding all my chosen bedroom colors into an experience... or... more likely, into an experiment of those color combinations. Just you wait and see!!!
To the left is the tiniest, cutist bedroom you'd ever want to see. Not big enough to be much more than a small child's room, but so cosy and inviting. And here, the wall color is not too bad. It's actually a warm taupe color, the best selection in the house. The floor is a rich, warm wood, with almost a brassy finish, so it just radiates comfort. This, this small, encompassing room, will be the new home office. (And of course... scrapbook center.) It has two closets, one which I will leave for guests and the other that is just crying out for a built in computer/scrapbook center. I cannot wait! However.... since it is going to be my computer room, I have always wanted to paint something a deep red. I saw the color several years ago at Home Hardware and have wanted it ever since. It was 'Canadian Maple' or 'Burnt Maple' or something similiar. My friend, the decorator who worked there, had it in his hallway and dining room. My faith in myself went up several notches at that time!!!! If it was good enough for an interior decorator, it would most certainly be good enough for me. So the one room that has a decent color will be changed anyway.... who knew???
The master bedroom is that sickly shade of hospital green..... You know the one. That green color that is supposed to calm and soothe patients and help them on the road to recovery. That green color that makes me want to puke!!! Institutional green, I call it. Puke green, I visualize!. Definitely need some cheerful color change here. And right away would not be too soon! It's a big room, so a little color will go a looonnnngg way.
The second spare room fares a little better, but by this time, I really want to skin that rabbit. I swear next year he is bringing chocolate only... who made the decision to add those too sweet treats with the good stuff, anyway? Sure wasn't any woman I know! The walls in this room are more of a pastal salmon color. Pinky, but orangey at the same time. But not a pretty combination, like a fading sunset or an early morning sunrise. Not even the pretty color of an east coast trout (the west coast salmon is much deeper and richer in color... that might be an idea!!!). Down with pastels!!! Dump the duds! I can feel my fingers itching for a brush, and my heart tells me it's time to visit the hardware stores!
But don't forget the bathroom. Luckily enough, there are no walls to paint here. It is a dear little bathroom. Yes, it has all the necessities, but you can sit on the toilet, wash your hands in the sink and soak you feet in the toilet. And everything is a rich, time mellowed pine. Except the floor... a jewel toned, small tiled, ceramic floor, in a very rich and inviting dark blue color. I love it. And I love my sauna room too... because that's what the bathroom looks like. I plant to invest in some hot rocks, lots of candles and soothing waterfall. Don't know where I'm going to put it though!
So, it's off to the paint counters I go. Time to gather up all the little paint chips and folders, ponder over colors and combinations, plan my attack and march on! Catch you next time as I discover that what I went looking for isn't necessarily what I found. Sometimes life's choices are like a bowl of smarties... good to look at, lovely to taste, but the hidden part is the best part!
